Ingredients
1 pkg Framani’s classic Italian sausage, cut into thin, diagonal slices
1 can fire-roasted diced tomatoes, 14.5 oz. undrained
1 can organic crushed tomatoes, 14.5 oz. undrained
1 tsp dried basil
1 tsp balsamic vinegar
1/2 tsp dried oregano
1/4 tsp salt (Redmond Real Salt)
2 tsp garlic cloves, minced (or 2 cubes frozen Doret crushed garlic)
1 large onion, diced
1 red/orange/yellow bell pepper (or combo), cut into strips
2 tbsp extra virgin olive oil
4 gluten-free hamburger buns (Udi’s, or your fav)
4 slices provolone cheese
Directions
- In a large skillet, drizzle some olive oil and slightly brown the sliced Italian sausage (since it’s already fully cooked you don’t need to take a lot of time with this). Drain excess fat from pan.
- Stir in diced tomatoes, crushed tomatoes, basil, balsamic vinegar, oregano, salt, and garlic. Bring to a boil, then reduce the heat and simmer, uncovered, about 25-30 minutes.
- In a separate skillet, heat the olive oil and caramelize the onion and sweet bell pepper slices. When at desired tenderness, add to the Italian sausage combination above.

- To toast for serving, use a toaster oven or a conventional oven broiler. For toaster oven, line the oven dish with foil, then place all eight hamburger halves on the grill plate. Spoon the sausage, onion, and bell pepper mixture onto the buns, topping with a half slice of provolone cheese.
- Broil about 3 minutes or until all ingredients are hot and cheese is melted and bubbly. Serve open-faced.
Notes
- Framani’s ‘Classic Italian Sausage’ is delicious in this recipe. It contains no added MSG, no nitrates or nitrites, no antibiotics, no added hormones, and 100% vegetarian feeds. Whatever sausage you use, make sure to check the labels, making sure it’s not just gluten-free, but also meets your requirements for all ingredients used.
